Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP) is an advanced extension of the Proofpoint platform for detecting targeted attacks and malware that bypass traditional email protection mechanisms. TAP uses multi-stage analysis, including dynamic sandboxing, to examine attachments, URLs, and the behavior of malicious elements before they are delivered to the end user.
TAP is fully cloud-based, and analysis takes place in a controlled virtual environment that emulates various operating systems and user behaviors (e.g., clicks, document opening). The engine recognizes malicious macros, exploits, malware payloads, and behaviors typical of ransomware. TAP also includes analysis of links in messages—even if they are shortened or redirected—and dynamically redirects them to a secure environment (URL Defense).
The solution integrates with Proofpoint Email Protection and allows for automatic message quarantine, sender reputation updates, and user notification of potential threats. It also serves as a data source for Threat Intelligence and SIEM.
